From Sea to Summit: My Journey with the Indian Navy

By Lieutenant Commander Nidhi Taneja (Retd)

My journey with the Indian Navy began in 2012 as a Sub-Lieutenant. The years that followed took me from the sea to the mountains—each element teaching me something profound. The ocean taught teamwork and calm in uncertain waters. The mountains taught patience, endurance, and humility.

In 2015, I became the first lady officer of the Indian Navy to scale Mount Kun (7077 m)—a climb that redefined my understanding of strength. The journey began when my Commanding Officer recognized my potential and nominated me for the Basic Mountaineering Course at HMI, Darjeeling. After rigorous training, I earned the Best Cadet title and was chosen to lead.

Later, at NIMAS, Arunachal Pradesh, I underwent even tougher preparation for advanced mountaineering—training with sand-filled sacks, cycling 30 km on weekends, and camping in high-altitude terrain. Fatigue was constant, but so was my conviction.

Scaling Mount Kun was the ultimate test. The weather was brutal, the slopes unforgiving, but I carried the spirit of the Navy in every step. Reaching the summit wasn’t just a personal triumph—it was a statement that courage has no gender. For that expedition, I was honored with the Chief of Naval Staff Commendation.

Reflection
This journey taught me that resilience is not a one-time act—it’s a daily choice. Strength doesn’t always roar; sometimes it whispers, “keep going.” Whether on sea or snow, leadership means showing up with purpose, rising after every fall, and trusting that perseverance will take you farther than fear ever could.

ABCEL Perspective
Lieutenant Commander Taneja’s climb from sea to summit mirrors the ascent of every woman who chooses courage over comfort. Her story exemplifies how service transforms into self-mastery — the kind that uplifts others by example. Veterans like her remind us that resilience is not about conquering landscapes but about expanding what is possible for those who follow.
