How

01

Ask for a story: Choose one person (elder, artisan, teacher, neighbour) and ask for a short story about a festival, dish, craft, song, place, or family moment.

02

Record with care: With permission, record audio/video or write it down. Use 2–3 prompts like: “When did this start?”, “Who taught you?”, “What changed over time?”

03

Save and share back: Save with date, place, names. Send the saved story back to them (or family) to confirm and keep a copy in a dedicated folder/notebook.

Easy Start

Call one person, ask for a 5-minute story, and jot the title + one line + date.

Why It Matters

Small stories carry language, values, and skills. When you catch them and name them, they stay alive, and you feel more rooted.

Questions and Thoughts

  1. “I don’t know whom to ask.” → Start with one person you already greet often (relative, neighbour, local shop/temple volunteer).
  2. “I won’t remember the details.” → Record with permission or write three anchors: when/where/who.
  3. “It might feel intrusive.” → Ask gently, explain why you’re documenting, and let them choose what to share.

Care Notes

Always ask for consent before recording. Credit people by name if they’re comfortable; if not, keep it anonymous. Avoid posting sensitive details (addresses, personal hardships) without explicit permission.
